Set goals, plan and prioritize

It is important to have clear goals in life, it makes things easier because you will know the direction in which you are heading towards and hence have more control. Without goals, you will tend to experience negative feelings such as confusion and frustration that can drain your energy and reduce productivity.

How do you start setting clear goals for yourself? First, decide what is important to you, then write it down. This will allow you to sort out your thoughts and you are more likely to achieve the goal. While writing them down, it is important to make sure that they are SMART. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Carefully planning your goals increases the chances of you successfully attaining them.

Have a structure in place

Without a proper structure, life will tend to be more chaotic. This will result in you feeling more physically and mentally drained. Therefore it is important to ensure that you have a solid structure around you, both at home and at work. It provides certainty, it will allow you know to know what is going to happen and why it is going to happen.

Take holidays and long weekends

Due to their strong commitment in the company, many young professionals find it hard to go on holidays or to enjoy the long weekend. However this is necessary so that you can freshen your perspective on what needs to be done.

When you are on a holiday, learn to trust that you have got a good structure in place, with good support systems and you can take deserving time off. Mobile phones are encouraged to be switched off in order to prevent yourself from being tied down to by phone calls. If you haven’t had a holiday, you are not refreshed and when you are required to be thinking optimally, you will be too tired and burnt out.

Reward yourself

Think of rewards as something extra that you have been working towards to. After you have set your goals, and achieved them, take your deserving reward.

Reward is a good technique to tell yourself that you have achieved your goal and hence making you more motivated to completed the remaining goals. By doing this, everything will become more enjoyable. A big part of work-life balance is feeling great about yourself and what is better than to have rewards. Reward yourself both at home and at work. If you have achieved a small milestone, give yourself a small reward and if you have achieved a big milestone, take a deserving big reward.

Stay healthy

It’s important to eat well, sleep well and exercise.

It’s important to have a good desk, a good chair, good lighting and not to fall over cables and at home it’s just as valid. Also a good bed is a must – because you spend so much time there.
